Managing Gen Z Employee Workshop: From Friction to Performance

You don’t just need ideas; you’ve come to read this workshop. You’re looking for solutions. Maybe a manager is frustrated that a Gen Z employee keeps asking questions they think should already be answered. Maybe a new hire seems disengaged, or feedback conversations keep landing wrong. This workshop is built for exactly that moment: real, current friction between managers and Gen Z employees that needs a path forward, not just an explanation.

What Managers Learn in Our Managing Gen Z Employee Workshop

We start by naming the specific ClashPoints showing up on your team, the recurring friction around feedback frequency, communication channel, direction versus autonomy, and how initiative gets demonstrated and recognized. From there, the session moves quickly into practice: how to reframe a feedback conversation so it lands as coaching, how to set expectations explicitly instead of assuming they’re obvious, and how to tell the difference between a genuine performance issue and a communication mismatch.

This is deliberately a working session, not a lecture. Managers bring real, current situations to the table, and leave with a specific next step for each one, not just a general framework. Delivered as a focused half-day session or built into a broader people-management program, it’s designed for managers who are actively managing Gen Z employees right now, not preparing for it hypothetically.

Organizations that bring us in at this stage typically see a fast, visible shift: fewer repeated misunderstandings, feedback conversations that actually produce change, and managers who feel equipped instead of embattled.

    Who We Are

    Harnessing Collective Wisdom

Generations has developed a strong reputation for harnessing the collective wisdom and innovation of multiple generations to drive competitive advantage. Our experts deliver specialized consulting services that bridge generational divides and activate workforce potential. Since 1998, we have empowered thousands of organizations worldwide to foster inclusive, high-performing environments where Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, Generation Z, and emerging cohorts collaborate seamlessly. Our expertise lies not in superficial team-building exercises but in evidence-based strategies that address the root causes of intergenerational friction, yielding measurable improvements in productivity, retention, and cultural alignment.

Our origins trace back to two colleagues—a Baby Boomer and a Gen Xer—who, despite mutual respect, frequently encountered generational disconnects. At the time, the primary tension centered on work ethic: Baby Boomers prioritized extended hours, while Generation X advocated for additional “time off.” This request earned Generation X the title of “slackers” and ushered in the era of work-life balance debates.

This tension inspired our first bestselling book, When Generations Collide. Since then, we have evolved into a globally recognized consulting firm, authoring two additional titles: The M-Factor and Managing Millennials for Dummies. We have partnered with organizations across every major industry to resolve generational workplace challenges.

When we began, Millennials were entering high school, and the concept of Gen Z had yet to emerge. Over the years, we refined our approaches to align with the evolving needs of emerging professionals while honoring the expertise of seasoned contributors.

Our solutions equip leaders with strategies to build trust and create inclusive environments where every team member feels valued. Colleagues gain practical tools for enhanced communication and collaboration. New hires receive guidance to effectively navigate established workplace norms. Participants universally appreciate the deeper understanding they acquire about their intergenerational relationships, whether with children or parents.

Through engaging keynote presentations, interactive workshops, bestselling publications, and tailored consulting engagements, we empower leaders and teams to leverage the strengths of all generations in workplace and marketplace contexts.

We approach generational dynamics as a practical lens for understanding how people work, lead, and collaborate. Each generation has been shaped by different historical moments, technologies, and expectations, and those influences show up in real ways across today’s workplace.

With nearly three decades of experience and deep research, we help organizations turn generational insight into practical strategies that strengthen culture, improve collaboration, and drive measurable business outcomes.

Our work brings together diverse perspectives, experiences, and strengths, helping teams move beyond differences and use them to build trust, solve problems, and perform at a higher level.

    Frequently Asked Questions

The format is built around practice. Managers work real scenarios drawn from their own environment: a new hire who will not speak up in meetings, a request for schedule flexibility that conflicts with coverage, feedback that was received as criticism. Activities include structured peer discussion, scenario analysis in small groups, live rehearsal of difficult conversations, and reflection exercises that surface a manager’s own generational assumptions. We avoid abstract activities. In a managing Gen Z employee workshop the exercises are the job itself, slowed down enough to practice.

By treating the frustration as legitimate information rather than something to correct. Experienced managers have context worth respecting, and a workshop that dismisses it loses the room immediately. We work through the frustration in the open: what the behavior is, what generational context produced it, where the organization should adapt, and where the expectation should hold and simply be explained better. This interactive, hands-on approach produces far better outcomes than either capitulation or complaint, and it gives managers permission to hold standards while changing how they communicate them.

For a workshop built on discussion and practice, we generally recommend roughly 20 to 30 participants per facilitator, with 25 as a comfortable target team size. Larger groups are workable when the format shifts toward presentation with structured table discussion, and we can add facilitators to keep small group work meaningful. If you are running an entire management population through, we would typically recommend multiple sessions in the same group format rather than one oversized room, since practice time per person is what drives the result.

A half-day works well and is our most common format for manager groups. It allows enough time to establish the generational foundation, work through core practices, and run scenario practice. A full day allows deeper application, more practice repetitions, and time to build individual action plans, which is worthwhile with cross-functional or mixed groups drawn from multiple departments who also need time to align with each other. We also deliver 60-, 90-, and 120-minute sessions when calendars are tight, with the tradeoff being less practice time.

Each participant leaves with a small number of specific commitments rather than a broad plan: typically one change to their feedback cadence, one adjustment to how they onboard or set expectations, and one conversation they have been avoiding. The tools and frameworks from the session are captured in takeaways they can revisit, and Learner Action Guides give structure to the weeks that follow. We deliberately keep the action items small, because managers implement three things and abandon fifteen.
